Cannabis cultivation is one of the most environmentally damaging industries in history. As an agricultural activity, it’s the most energy-consumptive in human history, with the carbon footprint of cannabis production exceeding any other cultivational endeavour. The carbon footprint of each gram produced has become the least efficient, most energy consumptive agricultural activity ever performed by humankind.

These statements are not hyperbolic. Most current cannabis cultivation practices are unsustainable and will require the mass adoption of integrated technologies and practices to help cultivators drive down energy consumption to dramatically increase all operational efficiencies at scale.

As market forces and regulatory pressures combine with increased consumer demand for sustainable products, all future cannabis cultivation will require a commitment to sustainable practices.

“ Studying more than 1,000 locations across the United States, researchers from Colorado State University calculated the median emissions of growing one kilogram of cannabis to be about 3,600 kilograms of CO₂2 equivalent emissions. The amount varies from roughly 2,300 to 5,200 kilograms of emissions per kilogram grown depending on location. To put that in perspective, a kilogram of tomatoes grown in a British Columbia greenhouse heated with natural gas emits roughly two kilograms

SOFTWARE & DATA STRATEGIES

The proper integration of cultivation data analytics, facility controls and digital management tools takes the guesswork out of cultivation and removes critical stressors from both plants and staff alike.

Critical cannabis cultivation skills gaps and lack of experienced talent are primary obstacles in emerging, international cannabis markets. In an already fractured and disintegrated industry, language and geographic barriers amplify the challenges inherent to efficient cannabis production. There is no standardized, shared set of cultivation practices that can be accessed and deployed by new cultivators.

There is now rapid growth in demand for data-driven, turnkey cultivation strategies  that are based on a historically successful and proven suite of technologies and practices.

The most critical element of any cultivation strategy are the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that create and inform the day-to-day  work instructions for all staff, in every area of the business. Historically, these work instructions have been extraordinarily under-developed and incomplete.

GCG recognizes the importance of accessible, comprehensive  and digitized work instructions and employee tracking. GCG provides its client with proven digital strategies to support the cultivation staff at every stage, and ensure predictable, optimized outcomes.

Ganley Consulting Group’s TASA™ Digital Kiosk Strategy leverages the technologies of trusted industry partners to fill the toolbox with every tool you need:

  • Train

Multilingual Digital (video and augmented reality) SOPs and day-to-day work instructions stored in the cloud and accessible by the cultivation team via on-site tablet ‘cultivation kiosks’.

  • Automate

Implementation of total Cultivation Management Systems to automate and control key functions including fertigation, CO2 and light intensity variance.

  • Support

Intranet and Direct Access to GCG ‘Cultivation Solutions Team’ for troubleshooting horticultural and technical issues.

  • Alert

Automated alerts issued to assigned cultivation team members when environmental set points and equipment functionality drift out of optimum range.
